Uric acid is a waste product formed when the body breaks down purines, which are found in certain foods and are also produced by the body. This test measures the amount of uric acid in the blood and is primarily used to diagnose and monitor gout, a painful form of arthritis caused by uric acid crystal deposits in joints. High uric acid levels (hyperuricemia) can also indicate kidney problems, certain blood disorders, or metabolic conditions. Low uric acid levels may suggest liver disease, malnutrition, or certain genetic disorders. Uric acid levels are influenced by diet, alcohol consumption, medications, and various medical conditions. Regular monitoring of uric acid is important for patients with gout to prevent painful flare-ups and long-term joint damage.
