Luteinizing Hormone (LH) is a pituitary hormone that plays a key role in reproductive function in both men and women. This test measures LH levels in the blood to evaluate the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis and diagnose reproductive disorders. In women, LH works with follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) to regulate the menstrual cycle, stimulate ovulation, and maintain the corpus luteum. LH levels vary throughout the menstrual cycle, with a dramatic surge at midcycle that triggers ovulation. In men, LH stimulates the Leydig cells in the testes to produce testosterone. Abnormal LH levels can indicate problems with the pituitary gland, hypothalamus, or gonads. This test is commonly used to evaluate infertility, menstrual irregularities, delayed or precocious puberty, and pituitary function. LH is often measured alongside FSH to provide a complete picture of reproductive hormone status.
