Zinc is an essential trace mineral that plays a vital role in numerous bodily functions including immune system support, wound healing, protein synthesis, and DNA formation. This test measures zinc levels in the blood to evaluate nutritional status and diagnose zinc deficiency or excess. Zinc deficiency can cause impaired immune function, delayed wound healing, loss of appetite, hair loss, and in severe cases, growth retardation in children. Low zinc levels are common in malabsorption disorders, chronic illness, alcoholism, and certain genetic conditions like acrodermatitis enteropathica. High zinc levels are rare but can occur with excessive supplementation or certain industrial exposures. This test is commonly ordered when evaluating patients with unexplained symptoms, poor wound healing, or suspected nutritional deficiencies. Zinc levels are particularly important for patients receiving long-term nutrition support or those with chronic gastrointestinal conditions.
