Vitamin A and E is a comprehensive test that measures both fat-soluble vitamins to evaluate nutritional status and diagnose deficiency or toxicity. Vitamin A (retinol) is essential for vision, immune function, cell growth, and embryonic development, while Vitamin E (tocopherols) serves as a powerful antioxidant protecting cell membranes from oxidative damage. This combined test provides efficient evaluation of two critical nutrients that often have interrelated functions in maintaining cellular health. Deficiency of either vitamin can cause significant health problems: Vitamin A deficiency may lead to night blindness, xerophthalmia, and increased infection susceptibility, while Vitamin E deficiency can cause peripheral neuropathy, ataxia, and muscle weakness. The test is particularly valuable for evaluating patients with unexplained vision problems, monitoring nutritional therapy, and assessing antioxidant status in various disease states.
