Aluminum is a toxic metal that can accumulate in the body, particularly in patients with impaired kidney function. This test measures aluminum levels in the blood to monitor exposure and diagnose toxicity. Aluminum toxicity can cause encephalopathy with symptoms including speech problems, gait disturbances, seizures, and coma. It can also lead to bone disease, muscle weakness, anemia, and increased infection risk. Patients at highest risk include those on dialysis, individuals with chronic kidney disease, burn patients receiving certain treatments, and those on long-term parenteral nutrition. Aluminum is commonly found in medications, dialysate solutions, and certain medical devices. This test is essential for monitoring patients at risk for aluminum accumulation and guiding treatment decisions to prevent or manage toxicity.
Reference Range

Environmental exposure: 0−9 μg/L; patients on dialysis: <40 μg/L
