Testosterone is the primary male sex hormone (androgen) that plays a crucial role in male sexual development, muscle mass, bone density, and overall health. This test measures the total testosterone level in the blood to evaluate androgen status in both men and women. In men, testosterone is essential for normal sexual function, fertility, and maintaining secondary sex characteristics. Low testosterone levels can cause symptoms like decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, fatigue, muscle loss, and mood changes. In women, testosterone is produced in smaller amounts by the ovaries and adrenal glands, and elevated levels can cause hirsutism (excessive hair growth), acne, and menstrual irregularities. This test is commonly used to diagnose hypogonadism in men, evaluate fertility issues, investigate symptoms of androgen excess in women, and monitor hormone replacement therapy.
Patient Prep
