Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1) is a peptide hormone that serves as the major mediator of growth hormone (GH) effects on growth and metabolism. This test measures IGF-1 levels in the blood to evaluate growth hormone secretion and diagnose growth disorders. IGF-1 is produced primarily in the liver in response to GH stimulation and circulates bound to binding proteins. IGF-1 levels are more stable than GH levels and provide a reliable indicator of GH secretion over time. Low IGF-1 levels can indicate GH deficiency, pituitary disorders, or malnutrition, while elevated levels may suggest acromegaly or gigantism from excessive GH production. This test is particularly valuable for evaluating children with growth problems, monitoring GH replacement therapy, and assessing nutritional status in various disease states. IGF-1 measurements help distinguish between different causes of growth failure and guide appropriate treatment decisions.
