T3 Uptake is a thyroid function test that measures the binding capacity of thyroid-binding proteins in the blood, not the actual T3 hormone levels. This test is used in combination with thyroxine (T4) measurements to calculate the free thyroxine index (FTI), which provides a more accurate assessment of thyroid function. The T3 Uptake test helps distinguish between actual thyroid hormone abnormalities and changes in binding protein levels that can affect total hormone measurements. It's particularly useful when evaluating patients with conditions that alter protein levels, such as pregnancy, liver disease, or certain medications. This test is always interpreted alongside other thyroid tests and should never be used in isolation to diagnose thyroid disorders.
Patient Prep
Avoid biotin supplementation for 72 hours prior to testing.
