Iron and Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC) tests are essential for evaluating iron metabolism and diagnosing various types of anemia. Iron is a crucial mineral needed for red blood cell production and oxygen transport throughout the body. The TIBC test measures the blood's capacity to bind and transport iron, which helps distinguish between different causes of anemia. Iron deficiency anemia, the most common type of anemia worldwide, shows low iron levels with high TIBC. Anemia of chronic disease typically shows low iron with normal or low TIBC. These tests are also used to diagnose iron overload conditions like hemochromatosis, which can cause organ damage if untreated. Iron studies are particularly important for patients with unexplained fatigue, weakness, or other symptoms of anemia.
Patient Prep
Have sample drawn before patient is given therapeutic iron or blood transfusion. Iron determinations on patients who have had blood transfusions should be delayed for at least four days.
